Malaysian opposition leader denies gay sex claims again
Anwar Ibrahim says images that appear to show him having a sexual encounter with a man are 'a disgusting political gimmick' from the ruling party
Images of a man resembling Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim having a sexual encounter with a man were posted on a blog last week, but he strongly denies that he is the man in the photograghs.
'I categorically deny it,' Anwar said, adding that he is considering legal action. 'It is a disgusting political gimmick by UMNO [the ruling political party].'
The pictures posted last Thursday look like they are taken from a hotel room CCTV camera. They were quickly picked up by my pro-UMNO bloggers.
Anwar has twice been prosecuted under Malaysia's anti-sodomy law (Section 377A), but was acquitted both times.
In an interview with Gay Star News last December, Human Rights Watch deputy director (Asia) Phil Robertson said that it is clear that Section 377A is selectively enforced in Malaysia.
'The number of cases were this law has been used you could probably count them on one or two hands but it's been used twice on the opposition leader,' Robertson said.
A national election is expected to be called in the next few weeks and the ruling coalition and Anwar's People's Justice Party (PKR) are close in the polls.
PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli told Free Malaysia Today that he is sure the images released on the blog are part of a dirty tricks campaign by UMNO.
'It is definitely Umno’s modus operandi. These dirty tactics will be intensified as the general elections gets closer,' Rafizi said.
'The opposition leader has been branded a homosexual, Jewish supporter and serial rapist time and again and Malaysians know that these are the work of the ruling coalition.' (sumber)
