The more than 50 years of waiting to enjoy electricity supply by more than 100 families from Kampung Salak at the isolated island of Pulau Salak in the Santubong Parliamentary constituency ended when informed that the village will receive the rural electrification program (BELB) by the end of this year.

Member of Parliament for Santubong Datuk Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said that the patience shown by the people of Pulau Salak paid off when the government had recently approved the RM3 million BELB project for the village.

“It is the priority for the Barisan Nasional (BN) government to provide all the basic needs; electricity, water and road to all the people, however, they need to understand that it is impossible for the government to provide them to the people at one-go therefore, it would be implemented in phases.”

“One certain thing is, under the BN governance, these basic needs will eventually reached into your area sooner or later,” said Junaidi, who is also the Deputy Speaker of Parliament said this in his speech at launching of Kampung Salak (BELB) project which was held at the village’s community hall yesterday morning.

“The Kampung Salak BELB project, which will commence at once is expected to be fully completed by this December and upon completion it would enable more than 340 villagers to enjoy the electricity supply.”

Junaidi disclosed that the project is constructed under Revenue Scope Sdn Bhd and it will involve the construction of miles of submarine electric cables from the mainland.

During the speech, he also announced that his next development for the village would be to bring the water supply from mainland and from the result from a survey recently conducted by the Public Work Department (JKR), the project would cost around RM2.5 million.

Junaidi explained should the water project would be approved by the government, the project would be fully completed by the end of next year.

Also present at the launching ceremony were Pantai Damai Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Deputy Chairman Derahman Jeladin, Pemanca Rashidi Junai, Kampung Salak Community Leader Abu Bakar Gonjeng, Scope Revenue Sdn Bhd General Manager Razi Suhaimi and others.
