PTPTN MUST CONTINUES FOR THE GOOD OF MALAYSIA EDUCATION

Exclusive interview with the Parliament Deputy Speaker Datuk Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar on Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN) by New Sarawak Tribune

The Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN) scheme is a very good in term of the “one-team policy” as it is offered to all Malaysians regardless of their races; Malay, Chinese, Indian and other ethnics as long as they are Malaysians who were offered into Universities will be also offered for PTPTN.

Adding that it is very fair to all, Parliament Deputy Speaker Datuk Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said that the only thing he is not happy about PTPTN is, the fact that it does not sponsor those who enrol in private university and overseas universities.

“The government should create PTPTN to enable people for selective discipline meaning that it is very important for the government to develop the human resourse requirement of the country to sponsor student going to overseas and to private university but must be selective disciplines.”

“Or for those who go for Masters or PHD level PTPTN, the student must be sponsored as we still need a lot more intellectual, highly educated, highly trained people to go to universities to become their lecturers, professors and all that.”

Junaidi said toward this end, PTPTN cannot just look at the first degree level only, it must expend itself and this one aspect he still felt PTPTN got to do.

He however, disagree on the proposal by raised by the oposition to turn PTPTN into a free scheme saying that, on the question of turning PTPTN into free kind of thing and up polish that one, he disagrees because the people got to remember, any person who got everything free just like that will not have the feeling responsibility toward the institution itself.

Junaidi who is also the Member of Parliament for Santubong was interviewed by New Sarawak Tribune recently on the PTPTN issue.

“You must have a feeling of a responsibility towards it and another aspect is, let say RM10 billion, for the next 10 years, you got to look for another RM10 or RM15 billion. Where will the government get this money from?, accept from the same source again.”

He pointed out that the RM10 billion is good for the government to develope some projects as Malaysia has a lot more state that requires this money to develop and even though they may not see, you may not appreciate what happen in Sabah, Sarawak, Kelantan and even in Pahang.

“They need their development especially in the rural areas therefore you cannot simply rite up because if you writing up this one, the debts for the last 10 years, that means for the next 10 years you have to look for the same amount of money or even more because the number of student is growing so meaning it just the question of write off that one.”

Junaidi disclosed that even though to certain extend, what Khairy Jamaluddin (Rembau MP) said, taking off the 1 per cent cost, he (Junaidi) had to agree with that, because he didn’t aspect the government will charge administration fees again the student.

“I got that speech in the parliament, that is why I cannot change that thing and coincidentally Khairy brought exactly the same thing. Government only pay about 65 million. What government done is not good. If 65 milion doesn’t matter, one year. You write off the administration cost.”

“We know that administration cost, when the student take off and that all kind of thing, you got the staff, the chairman, the Board, CEO, and administration stuff to handle that hundreds and thousands of student. Errastic  of what  university says you are admitted to university of Sabah, the moment you received administration in Sabah, your PTPTN approved.”

“This are the kind of thing, some of them are doing efficiently back there. Look into the University record who are being accepted so government got to spend through government body and don’t ask children to pay. I disagree with the convention of the write-off.”

He said that he however, agrees with some best performing student who passed brilliantly and struggle strongly got the good pass in the university and given the scholarship. Because this prospect to write off. dont evaluade local university with foreign university. Because in foreign university it is not easy at first class honour.

“Local university is not heavy to get first honour are more than 3rd class honour. In foreign University for example in England, sometime it took 10 years for the university to have someone to graduate in first class honour.”

“Bottomline is, Pakatan rakyat de fatco leader Anwar Ibrahim is just politicking because at the end of the day, he will have to listen to the whole tactical advices from the government also.”

“He cannot dismiss the whole government officers and asking government what to do and he cannot dismiss Bank Negara expert and all this. So therefore, what he does is not simply his idea, not for him to just bang this whole idea and government accept it (should by chance) he becomes the prime minister.”

“You see for example what happen in Selangor, Kedah and Pulau Pinang. Not everything he can do just like that. He got to listen to the cabinet and to expert advice and how it effect the country as a whole,” said Junaidi. -New Sarawak Tribune
